Hopefully it’s a cool new IP.

I mean, does anyone actually care at this point? Ubisoft is a joke if a company that pumps out the most copy/paste games in the industry. For all their creativity, they sure fail to capture anything unique. They had a good run with the division and decided to hand it off to someone else, they botched hyperscape royally even though it was a great game, and their CoD clone just felt like a missed opportunity in the beta.

As long as it’s Splinter Cell, and not AC: Splinter Cell, or Far Cry: Splinter Cell.

Their Star Wars games looks good, but the Avatar / Pandora game looks to be just a Far Cry clone.

I see some very valid reasons for tons of people to not care about them, but I usually find something to enjoy in some of their releases. They’re high on content, usually not that boring, even if they can be mindless. They upsell on DLC, but it’s rarely needed for a game to be enjoyable. And, on some rare moments (amid hours of quests) they can actually have some good writing.

The recent news of them deleting accounts took me by surprise though. That’s just a terrible move for them on all accounts.

I think it is really funny that with all the consolidation talks in the gaming industry, we hear so little rumors about UbiSoft getting bought. Microsoft is on a buying frenzy, SONY gets nervous, EA and Take2 have many multiples of Ubi’s equity, just to name the obvious players. The gaming industry has just been rated as more valuable than each the publishing, music and movie industries. Still UbiSoft seems to be in such a bad spot we don’t constantly hear publicly about a possible future acquisition.

The irony is that Ubisoft desperately now wants to be bought, but the massive kerfuffle over Microsoft buying Activision, and just how much of a ballache that has been may have made further industry-shaking acquisitions unlikely for the time being.

Yves is stuck with his massive, lumbering, inefficient, copy-and-paste factories and their collapsing internal structures filled with worker abuse and sexual harassment allegations.
