I tend to agree that developped countries tend to underestimate the fragility of their systems. But then there still are simple facts like if you spend 10% of your income on food, you can afford significant food price hikes. If you spend 70% of income on food, then a small rise is already lethal.

And the Canary islands too. I wonder if there’s precedent from them going extinct in mainland Africa and the naturally returning

This is low-key one of the craziest pieces of recent news to me

The dinos are back, but of some species, every generation is smarter than the last, until they actually start speaking. Because they had a super civilisation, and their scientists encoded the key to rebuilding their civilisation in the DNA we found. The next generation becomes smart enough to invent a time machine, and try to manipulate us into going back in time to prevent the comet strike that took them out. Joke’s on them - they were in fact aware of the comet strike, but as we travel back in time together, the human part of the crew sabotage their Armageddon mission and make sure the strike actually happens, to pave the way for mammal domination!

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Recommendations after the Murder bot Diaries

2·1 year agoHaving enjoyed the entire expanse series, I didn’t really enjoy this book. I can’t really put my finger on it. I think my biggest issue is that the characters remain pretty bland. Of the group you follow, many remained little more than a name for me.
There’s another free OSM based app that does have some traffic data, it’s called Magic Earth. Not open source though, as their business model is to sell adapted versions.

Do we?
