If you’re into cooking, history, or both, Tasting History with Max Miller is great. Lots of wonderful history, from the common to the obscure. He works hard to find primary sources for every story he shares, as well as calling out fake stories. He also corrects himself when he gets something wrong. And the recipes are fascinating!

Been getting into Bonsai Mirai lately. Very educational, in-depth videos about how to do Bonsai, with tips for everyone from a beginner to an expert. Also very relaxing to watch.

Getting criticized for something could potentially lead to the town/your family driving you out. Either through the people listening to the complaints deciding you weren’t ‘good’ for the town, or others dogpiling on with their own complaints, real or imagined.

You have to remember, there were bandits, wild animals, and deadly weather outside the protection of our small groups. And that’s assuming you got to survive the ostracizing in the first place.

The Bible gives a rather chilling example: if your kid is disobedient or troublesome, drag them to the front of the town and loudly criticize their behavior. Then, it is the moral imperative of the town to assist you in stoning your kid to death.

With things like that being a social norm, is it any wonder we developed a fear of criticism?

My uncle is a pastor. So when his kid came out as trans, he and his wife did the ‘good moral Christian’ thing and shamed her and harassed her until she committed suicide.

This is not a rare or unique story; many people all over the world have stories like this. Is it any wonder those who pay attention find religion distasteful? It may be a part of humanity, but many unpleasant things are, and there is nothing ‘edgy’ about rejecting them.

Yes, there are ‘good’ churches in my town that feed and clothe the poor; a far cry from my uncle’s church. But they are part of the same religion, and the fact that religion accepts both, morals be damned, means I have no interest in it.

I’m going to go old-school here:

Magic Knight Rayearth - admittedly the manga was better since the anime had to do filler episodes, but the idea of a good story with no good guys or bad guys, and subtly riffing on RPG tropes, was an interesting watch. The OAV is a different take but also good (object censored nudity notwithstanding) and has a tighter storyline.

The Slayers - one of the anime that I first watched, so it holds a special place in my heart. Megumi does an amazing job as Lina.

Kimagure Orange Road - one of the earlier popular anime in the ‘love triangle’ genre, with the fun add-on that the main character secretly has esper powers. The characters are pretty well-rounded too.

Gundam Wing - yes, yes, but jokes aside it isone of the anime that made Mobile Suit shows popular outside of Japan; if you want to try out the Mobile Suit genre then it’s not a bad one to start with. Plus the Gundam designs are pretty cool, especially the Endless Waltz versions.

…And one more modern one: Spy x Family. It’s cute, dramatic, and the kid actually acts like a kid and not a mini-adult.
