The clutch would be to the left of both pedals in an automatic. Your foot rests in the empty space left of the brake pedal, usually there’s some kind of footrest roughly where the clutch would be. If anything you’d slam on that rest. Lifting your left foot off that rest (where the clutch you intend to slam would be) to hit the center pedal (which is where the brake is in any car) makes zero sense as a potential mixup. Not to mention it would feel extremely unnatural to operate a pedal so far right with your left foot if you tried.

How could that possibly happen? Do you left-foot-brake?

Not only are they not wasted, they are absolutely necessary. What’s important to understand is, however, that large parts of the negative impact of cars aren’t affected by EVs at all. It’s not just internal combustion engine exhaust pollution, it’s the waste of space, gigatons of asphalt for roads and parking, microplastics from rubber tires driven endless miles by a billion people, traffic congestions and the never-ending demand for another lane to fix them, ““cities”” sprawling out so far that everything is too far to get to by any means other than driving, pedestrian (if such a thing even still exists in your neck of the woods) safety, noise, socioeconomic factors such as the high upkeep costs vs low-income population who are reliant on a car in a car dependant world, …

We have to transition to EVs either way, but it’s not going to fix anything meaningful. And that’s just the neutral outlook, a real danger we’re facing is that through car manufacturers’ greenwashing that is already in full swing, we coax ourselves to a good eco conscience over our no-emissions cars and continue growing the dependency, which would eventually increase the impact. The only real way of reducing the impact is by reducing cars and car dependency where it’s possible. And people are, very slowly, waking up to the fact that this is more often the case than they were led to believe by lobby driven media and politics of the last 60 years.

Are you talking about the capabilities of the USB protocol 3.x, or the mechanical design like I was? I don’t know a single property where the mechanical design of USB is superior to Lightning, but I’m ready to be enlightened.

Yeah, I still think it’s a great mechanical interface, if not the best. Would’ve been great if rather than killing it, regulatory bodies had forced USB to adopt the lightning design for the C type.

The number of registered cars has risen considerably, even in the last 10 years or so, and cars are getting increasingly bigger. IIRC registered cars in Berlin for instance has risen from 1.2 to 1.4 m in the last decade or so without the city expanding or gaining any meaningful parking space. Law enforcement is typically fundamentally carbrained, so they are lenient on such violations, thinking you can’t punish the poor people who have to park their car somewhere. With modern technologies it could be battled quite effectively, but it’s simply not politically desired in the Autoland. Instead, privacy and bureaucratic overload are made up as excuses on how it’s impossible to get a hold of it.

I think it goes past mildly on the concern scale. Car centricity in German cities already starkly reduces the quality of life there, and we still haven’t even collectively recognised it as a problem, instead it is still getting worse in 2023.

is there a terminal emulator that has “modern” text entry controls while still having tab completion? Like selecting text by going shift+leftarrow or deleting whole words by holding ctrl+backspace/del or replacing whole words that are selected while pasting text rather than it pasting at the point where the curser is at the start of selected text so you still have to manually delete the original characters. Maybe Undo, redo with ctrl (shift) z…

Stuff like that. Just wondering. I always find it very cumbersome to fiddle with long commands especially if they contain long paths that you want to modify. Lots of backspace and arrow-keys hitting for every single character…
