The Force Awakens is just “A New Hope [Remix].” They didn’t “do it without George Lucas,” they just took what George did and put it through the JJ Abram’s filter.
It doesn’t help that Nintendo seems to actively hinder competitive play in their games. It’s not starting from a winning position, but I wouldn’t count it out entirely.

You won’t get the shiny charm, and hunting for shiny Pokémon without it is kind of a pain in the ass.

Pokémon TCG would probably make a stink about that too. I would agree that more needs to be done to differentiate them but the Guns and the art-style should do that pretty well.
Using balls to capture and store Pals was a big mistake though and they definitely should’ve made a few more drafts on some of those aspects before reveal.
Honestly? I see more Totoro in there than Electabuzz.
Where does the line get drawn between inspiration and stealing? I’m not trying to be facetious, it’s just the kind of question that I think a lot of people will have vastly different answers to.
I think there was room to continue other characters’ stories. However I don’t think they left it quite long enough for everyone to really miss it. Then the quality and quantity of what they were putting out quickly proved they weren’t up to the task.
The papyrus script really pulls the whole thing together.
