These laws provide a way to register to vote. Not the only way. Because, in the US, most adults have a drivers license, they are the default form of photo ID. Even people who don’t drive are most likely to get their photo ID from the DMV. (For those not in the US this probably seems weird and they are not wrong.)

Because the DMV has become the default issuer of photo IDs in the US, and because there are requirements to update one’s address when moving, the DMV knows where everyone lives (at least for the most part).

These laws then say “hey, your ID says you live at 123 Main St, any town” would you like us to register you to vote there too? It’s not the only way to register to vote, someone can still register directly via a dedicated form, it’s just another way to register that makes it much easier for many people.

In practice, these laws massively increase voter registration numbers.

You make good points, but there have been moves recently to try to make “motor voter” systems (you register to vote automatically when you get your driver’s license) illegal in the US…

Even then, nothing stops the client from lying to the server.

I typically try to not be logged in as the user whose home directory is being copied when I do this just to avoid any collisions. Otherwise this looks right.

As a 20+ year SuSE user, I agree it’s a great distro. So much of this is just picking a distro that’s decent on the desktop and going with it. I would say there are some wrong choices but there isn’t one right choice.

Whatever distro OP picks, they should join the Lemmy/subreddit/forums for that distro and keep an eye on them.

I was looking at moving to Proton as this all went down. Those plans are on hold.

After reading through it, I am having trouble figuring out how to read his comments because I wonder if there is some different cultural references or simplification going on between the Swis exec and American readers.

It was absolutely a stupid comment and was then the response was handed badly, but I don’t know that I read it as aligning with Fascism.

Yeah. I am not ready to move to Proton quite yet, but this doesn’t feel like it was intended the way many Americans are reading it.
