21·3 months agoFrom my perspective, I’d rather have an enemy of country to have my personal data. It’s far harder to use for them than for my country.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Signal Founder Moxie Marlinspike: Telegram is not private. There is nothing private about it. They've done a really amazing job of convincing the world that this is an encrypted messaging app
71·3 months agoEnd to end encryption is worth nothing when WhatsApp have access to the encryption key. And the fact that all photos you see on WhatsApp are saved on your phone without encryption means that it’s only encrypted when it’s sent, nowhere else.
I also have very suspicious examples of advertising linked to WhatsApp conversations.
It was not overlooked, it was weaponized. Just like in Germany in the 1930’s.
The turning point was 2001. The liberals thought they could use that enemy from within and they thought they could handle the fascists, until they became the fascists. Now they are just like the fascists, but people hate them more than ever, so they directly side with them in order to not be left over when the vanilla fascists takes the power.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I'm looking for someone knowlegeable in mass drivers/coilguns/railguns
2·4 months agoThe two theoric basis for that are the Maxwell equations and the electromagnetic force equation. It should not be overly difficult to process that. But after that, it’s engineering, and there there are many, many moving parts.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•How Americans describe politician's views
6·4 months agoWhen you look at the numbers, you can gather that most far left propositions probably come from maga supporters.
You can derive from that that only 4% of non maga consider Sanders as far left.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it true that being short gives me a brutal advantage of exploiting particular vulnerability of a tall opponent's belly in case of a fight?
3·5 months agoI don’t know about knives, but in fencing sword, the first target is the hand and arm, not the belly. The hand is as close to you though for any size of your opponent.
A tall opponent has a longer reach, so that is what you need to be wary of in fencing. It means it does have a advantage to attack. But once the blades crossed, the advantage is gone, and the you have the advantage bellow your taller opponent. Because you have more room for movement in the two blades space than your opponent. You are committed there though, because getting away from the situation will be harder.
A French youtuber did a study on porn, to see if it was violent as lawmakers make it seem. And as a matter of facts, the titles and tags rarely represent what it actually is.
My guess step mom is a side category to milf.
Of those things, only one will reliably work though.

I didn’t have problem updating debian stable to a next version. I got problems when I jumped 2 stables at once. Which was to be expected.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more users
1·10 months agoIt does not reduces maintenance. And it costs hard drive, and with heavy use, probably ram too
Redundancy of dependencies in different versions, might also be loaded in ram in different version, which can add its own kind of problems in some circumstances.
Maintenance is only reduced on the surface level. The complexity you don’t see as a problem is the actual maintenance problem. It’s not a problem only if you’re not the one dealing with integration, maintenance or security.

1·10 months agoMy opinion on flatpak is that it only allows developers to be loosy with dependencies. I’m convinced it will fall appart in a decade or two because it’s too messy and bloated as a technical solution.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more users
1·10 months agoThere are a lot of things an average consumer don’t wa’t to deal with, but that’s true for windows as much as Linux. The question is not what they want to do, but what they need to do and if it seems difficult.
A command line can also be distributed as a bash script btw. The difference with an obscure executable that will edit the registry on windows it that the bash file can be checked much more easily.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more users
12·10 months agoI have a brother who is not into computers. But he has a shitty laptop (with only 3gb of ram) so windows stopped working on it (because Windows update). So I installed a Linux on it, and he is very happy with it.
He even managed to change the desktop by himself. Installing some stuff was not obvious (like making a scanner work), but I did it guiding him by phone and text.
Command line is in fact much easier in this case than any gui. In a gui, you must know it by heart to correctly guide the person. A command line you can fine tune it on your side, send it on discord, and he only has to copy/paste. That is much more powerful.
And the security is not less than downloading an executable on a dubious website.
It is true that specialist tend to overestimate the skill of unknowing people. But when it come to computer, people also forget that normal people always went for the help of specialist for their technical needs. Nothing changed.

Games@lemmy.world•[Update: Valve Responds] Mastercard Denies Pressuring Steam To Censor 'NSFW' GamesEnglish
21·10 months agoExcept that’s entirely false. Even now they are pretending they do nothing, it’s the intermediaries who force things.
Mastercard sells absolutely nothing. And they have no responsibility for anything sold. And no one ever thought it was mastercard selling or even allowing to sell illegal things.
In fact, most people will believe no one sound of mind will buy something illegal with a credit card because mastercard and the likes will give your identity to the police.
So it’s not about illegal things, and it’s not about their image.

I am of the opinion that green are very often left wing conservatives.
