  • #1 IMO is that they don’t make anything original anymore. I don’t want to go see a live action remake of a classic cartoon movie. They can’t possibly recapture what made the original great, and to be honest, what made the original great was probably the ignorance of youth and the nostalgia filter through which you personally view it.

If movie theaters are doing poorly, the movie industry should try to make smaller budget and slightly riskier original movies and movie theaters should charge less for a seat if they’re having trouble filling cinemas. They make most of their money from concessions anyway and those are optional, so just get butts in seats and you’ll make more money.

  • I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet, but a reason might be that providing an API is cheaper than web scraping.

If people really want access to your data, they can just scrape your website, but that requires loading all the data through the website itself which requires loading millions or billions of video thumbnails, comments, descriptions, recommendations, etc. It’s much cheaper for them to send a JSON through an API, even though they might know that some people are trying to undermine them by using that data to circumvent their advertising.

  • I would use Heroic Games Launcher personally. You can add any game you want, and before it creates the prefix for you, you have the option of running installers on the prefix first. Then you can add the game executable. If the game requires proton fixes which it very likely would, you can search the game on SteamDB to find the AppID then make sure there’s a file called steam_appid.txt next to the game executable with the game’s app ID from SteamDB. That will tell Proton to apply any fixes that it has on file automatically.

If you’re a fairly advanced user, you can also just look at what files are included on the game’s SteamDB “Depots” page. For example, GTA San Andreas looks like it requires “DirectX Jun 2010 Redist”. You can either download that from Microsoft or you can run winetricks (through Heroic, or through terminal) on the prefix to add d3dx9.

    Steam DB: https://steamdb.info/

  • First of all, make sure that Steamworks Common Redistributables is installed because according to the steamdb page for GTA 5 it requires vcrun2022 and d3dx9 installed from winetricks (or protontricks) which it normally gets from the Steamworks Common Redistributables automatically.

From my admittedly very brief research, it doesn’t look like you can play GTA 5 online if you skip the launcher but if you want to just play offline you can set your Steam Launch Options by right clicking the game and going to properties. If you set it to %command% -scOfflineOnly that will skip the launcher but disable multiplayer.

You can also try setting the Steam Launch Options to PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% which forces Proton to use the OpenGL driver rather than the Vulkan driver for D3D.

  • It’s definitely an edge case by say you’re in ~/ and you run a script like ./code/script.sh then it thinks the current working direct is ~/ rather than what is probably intended which is ~/code/. If your bash script uses full paths like /home/$USER/code/ then it will still run correctly regardless of the current working directory that the scrip was run from.

In most European countries you need a 4 year university degree in criminology to become a cop. They have the same standards for average police officers as we in North America have for Federal law enforcement. So while it’s certainly true that some European countries have shitty cops, the ones with stricter barriers to entry have slightly less shitty cops.

Here’s an interactive map although it does seem to be missing a fair bit of data for Europe. The USA has the most abysmal Police training time at just 500 hours of training between being a civilian and being a Police officer.

edit: lol whoops I never actually posted the link earlier. Here it is: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/police-training-requirements-by-country

  • I found Farscape impossible to watch because of the main character. The show suffers because of the classic misogynistic writing where all the female characters are tripping over themselves to get noticed by the bland, aggressive, stupid, and overly cocky “average Joe” that was thrust into an unusual situation. It’s extremely dated writing and as a woman, it really irritates me.

The rest of the show is great! But the main character just ruins it for me completely. Unfortunately that kind of writing is everywhere in older sci-fi. I started and gave up on Stargate: Atlantis for the same reason. I wish someone would release an edit with the more obnoxious parts removed because I can tell that I’m missing out on some great sci-fi but it’s just unwatchable to me.

On the other hand you’ve got shows like ST:TNG, ST:DS9, Battlestar Galactica, even Lexx, where either women are treated with respect and not overly sexualized, or if they are sexualized then so are the men, and the men are kind, intelligent, and curteous, or if they’re not then they’re probably a villain.
