  • Or the push is to be able to repair and continue using my shit?

People regularly reaffix buttons or patch holes in clothing. Should they not be allowed to? I mean, it’s not that expensive to just buy new clothing, right? And the new styles are just better than what you’re used to, that’s objective fact even if it’s not to your taste.

Only a buffoon would want to spend a little less and keep using a thing they like when they could spend a lot more and get a thing they might not like!

  • So Penn & Teller used to do a show called Bullshit where they would investigate things and explain why the “common knowledge” on them was, well, bullshit.

In the episode on handwashing, they took samples from people’s hands, faces, and groins before and after using the bathroom. They came to the conclusion that the before/after on hands was negligible, because most people’s groins are under multiple layers of protection and don’t get exposed to germs.

What they didn’t bring up in the show is that that’s not why you wash your hands when you’re in the bathroom. It doesn’t matter if your asshole is downright sterile, because it’s everything else in the world that is filthy. You wash your hands when you’re in the bathroom because you should be washing your hands regularly throughout the day and it’s easiest to do when you’re already in the room with the soap and running water. It’s got very little to do with anything else you may be doing in the bathroom.

  • I worked there twenty years ago, so things may have changed. But back then, you had to take a civil service exam.

They’d do them 3 or 4 times a year, usually on a Saturday at the nearest big city. On the exam, you demonstrate your ability to read house numbers, understand traffic laws, and in general not be a complete idiot. Then you pick your top three post offices you’d want to work out of.

When one of those offices has an opening (which can take months), they interview candidates starting with the highest-scoring people who took the exam and working their way down until the local manager finds a good fit.
