no clue. I just noticed it getting slower and worse not only on my instance but a few others thus the reason I switched.

2·21 days agonix-shell is great too. sort of like a “demo” of something before actually committing to it or if you just want to use something one off without adding it to your config and rebuilding.
As a dev it’s fantastic for testing also. can just try something on a bunch of browsers without actually installing the browser. love it.

Games@lemmy.world•Xbox ditching hardware and exclusive games "makes sense," former Microsoft exec and Blizzard boss says, as "only a moron would continue" making consoles as games go third partyEnglish
32·21 days agoI believe if a new generation of consoles are released they’re just going to be glorified streaming boxes. Sony has pretty much hit a plateau as far as graphics go, there’s not much you can improve upon now. And sure people are cancelling and complaining about gamepass but Microsoft might just go the route of “we’ll tell you what you want, and if you want this exclusive you’ll have no choice but to subscribe”.
So you’ll pay for this streaming box, you’ll get maybe a couple months of the subscription for free, then you’ll pay $30 to $50 a month to get access to their catalog. Sony and Nintendo will follow suite. If you want to actually “own” anything you’ll play on PC and even then that’s truly up for debate. Like do you actually own the content you buy on Steam?

7·21 days agoI’ve said it before but the story just wasn’t good. the soundtrack was meh, I mean it’s not even a good NIN album and if were to stand on it’s own it would likely be considered the worst NIN album.
All they had to do, story wise, was just follow up Legacy. That’s it. They could have just made it a redemption story for Tron who would not only be again “fighting for the user” but also for the ISOs. Have Sam and Quorra go back to the grid to finally save Flynn, help Tron, and bring the ISOs to the real world or simply make the grid a peaceful place for the ISOs and have Tron become the grids leader. whatever. that’s all they had to do. Hell they could have had it mirror god damn Steve Jobs and his return to Apple because THAT’s what it felt like they were setting up in Legacy. I know that’s silly but that was the path they were heading down. They didn’t need Dillinger and all that.
the thing that made Tron and it’s various spinoffs work is that at the end of the day there’s a user that is hailed as a sort of God that tries to fix things on the grid. There is no User in Ares. hell there’s no Tron in Ares.
the only issues I had with KDE when I was recently using it all revolved around the panel. Random crashes with “too much” interaction. Adding widgets for the panel or desktop is still to this day hit or miss. clicking the “get new widget” option is a roll of the dice if it will actually work or not or even find the thing you want. It’s still horrible at loading stuff in there. and installing whatever, again, is a roll of the dice if it will actually do it or not.
I like KDE, it’s a good and solid DE but man do they really need to focus on fixing the panels and the installation/discovery of widgets. The alternative is using the pling store and that’s just a headache on it’s own.
Years ago when I still worked for companies as an employee my team had this PM that was so desperate to get things done and get them done early. I mean he was a nice guy but always pushing. The thing is though my team was pretty damn solid and we got stuff done early, all working, tests passed, all that cause we liked to play battlefield 3 and eve online together when we had the free time. Course we never told the PM this. Also the PM liked to motivate us with food if we worked late to get stuff finished. So we used this to our advantage and once or twice a week we allowed the PM to buy us dinner and beer/snacks because we told him we’d be working late to ensure deadlines were met. When in reality we’d just be in the office playing eve online together and wanted food and beer while we did so.
I don’t feel bad for the project manager, he came from money, he constantly told everyone he came from money, so we took his money.

Linux@programming.dev•Which distro for a non-technical windows user?English
11·22 days agoGo with Fedora KDE. it’ll be the most polished DE and a good starting off point for transitioning from Windows. Mint is fine but there can be issues. Ubuntu is a headache especially when it comes to updates and upgrades (experienced it on my server this past weekend) and their sneaky “we’ll install a snap instead” approach to some things I just don’t like.
Fedora is easy and a good middle ground to get them into Linux. Also since you already use Fedora it will be an easy transition for both of you since you can provide first hand support.

7·23 days agoas others have stated, Friendica. The issue is finding a stable working instance. I was on Friendica.world but doesn’t work anymore as far as I can tell.
it’s funny because once you start using other distros you quickly realize how easy Arch actually is. I find Arch more straight forward and easier to use that Ubuntu. Ubuntu makes me want to rip what remaining hair I have out.

5·23 days agoon my CachyOS/Arch and NixOS machines I just use borg to backup to my dedicated server. Very easy to do. I have a couple alias’ set up so I can view my backups easily through my file manager on whatever local machine. Essentially all you have to do is make a script to tell it what files/folders to backup, what to potentially ignore, how often you want to backup, the time of day you want it to happen, can also tell it to delete old backups. In NixOS it’s painfully easy to set up and can be done within the configuration.nix. On other distros the only difference is you have to set up a service and timer for it.
but I like it, it’s straight forward, never had issues with it.

2·23 days ago“slightly heavier”? wouldn’t that actually make it the heaviest? I mean hell the Omarchy dotfiles clock in at like 8 gigs and I thought that was a lot but 35gig download? good lord.
I mean if you’re going to go the multiple user accounts route for different things wouldn’t it just be easier to just use QubesOS? No account switching and granted it will be a bit slower but saves you the headaches.
I did end up switching from searxng to 4get on my server yesterday as I previously stated I would. It’s much better. way faster.
if you want you can try it out on my instance https://4get.andmc.ca/

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•They say word-of-mouth marketing is the most effective form of marketing. What games did you (not) enjoy that came well-recommended by friends to you, and why did they recommend it to you?English
5·24 days agoI was the same with the Dark Souls games. I just had no interest in them because they just looked way too punishing.
Then I discovered the lore. I’m a huge lore nerd. I mean I absolutely love Warhammer 40k and I’ve never played it and don’t know how to play it. I don’t have any of the minitures but man the lore for that is awesome. It was the same for the Dark Souls games. I just stumbled across a video by that VatiiVidya guy and I was hooked. Now I wanted to play and just pick up everything and read the tiny bits of lore attached to every item in the games and then piece together this universe.
Dark Souls 3 being my favourite. That story once you discover what’s REALLY happening is amazing. The lore for DS3 really turns the whole playing experience on its head. Suddenly you go from thinking you’re the good guy trying to save this fucked up world to realizing that “wait, am I the baddie?” Like you have to return these guys to their thrones but you begin to understand WHY they don’t want to sit on their thrones and in the end you honestly don’t blame any of them for abandoning their task.

Keep in mind that sometimes a Battle.net update will be released that will essentially break playing WoW and other games via the launcher on Linux. usually it’s resolved within a couple days. your best bet is to install it via a Lutris script and if something goes wrong DO post about it either on the Lutris Forums and/or Discord because one of the main Lutris devs is a WoW player so if there are issues with installing WoW on your system he will be right on top of it. It’s your best bet in resolving an issue, he knows all the work arounds and fixes to get battle.net and WoW running on any distro.
