No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Anyone remember that "First is the worst, second is the best" rhyme kids used to do? Where did that come from?
4·3 days agoI didn’t know what OP was talking about until your comment unlocked the memory.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•why android root causes apps to not work and needs fixing?
24·3 days agoGreed.
I think the main pushers of the ‘root = insecure’ narrative are movie and music studios who think only rooted users can rip their media. Banks have also bought into thinking root means compromised for some reason.
The phone OEMs themselves and the carriers also tend to dislike root because they like to have as much control over the users as they can get, such as system installed spyware which rooted users are likely to disable, or overwrite with a completely different ROM.
I really miss the good old days before SafetyNet.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something you dont care to understand or "get"?
2·6 days agoI guess if that’s really a genetic thing and not learned then it makes sense, but that isn’t the impression I’ve gotten.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something you dont care to understand or "get"?
1·6 days agoI don’t use seasonings that hurt. And literally can’t imagine a flavor so good it would be worth that.
Everything I’ve had with even the slightest amount of capsaicin is something I thought would be much better without it. In extreme cases I can’t even taste the normal flavors the food would have because the pain is a stronger sensation.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something you dont care to understand or "get"?
3·6 days agoI’ve never understood that either - Is it different from say stubbing a toe or biting a tongue? (Not hard enough to do permanent damage) Those should release endorphins also, right?
It seems to me like people rarely hurt themselves on purpose except food and sex stuff, and the sex stuff appears to be uncommon.

61·6 days agoSpicy food.
I can’t comprehend how individuals or entire cultures choose to just deal with the pain until they build a tolerance.
Sure it probably made sense when the choice was to starve or to eat something that hurts (even a little), but as soon as non-painful food was available, why continue with the kind containing “Don’t eat me!” chemicals?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What band/artist have you seen live more than once, would gladly go see again, and what keeps you coming back?
11·7 days agoGenuine answer: Weird Al
He puts on an incredible show every time. The costume changes alone put most artists to shame. He’s just as enthusiastic and active as he was over 40 years ago (Seriously, the man is 66)
And of course the songs and skits are hilarious.
We have tickets to see him this year for the second time on his current tour.
Tap to pay works perfectly fine on my plastic cards that don’t run out of battery or need to be unlocked before I tap them. I genuinely don’t see what the big deal is about having it work on a phone.

Linux@programming.dev•On the unfortunate need for an "age verification" API for legal compliance reasons in some U.S. states
1·8 days agoThat is a good point. Websites also if they are visited daily or if a web beacon or such can access the API.
Manually adjusting the brackets until 18+ (or just lying about the precise date) would grant more privacy. I can see making that trade-off though.

Linux@programming.dev•On the unfortunate need for an "age verification" API for legal compliance reasons in some U.S. states
8·9 days agoIt’s not though. It’s literally asking the user “how old are you?” and not even caring if they lie. It’s not even requiring a date, just a number of years.
Hey Dad, it’s late, let’s go back to !dadjokes@lemmy.world
You know sonic booms? This is basically like ‘optical booms’ from radiation in water that’s traveling faster than the speed-of-light-in-water (which is less than the speed of light in a vacuum)

I’m overall still skeptical, but this does sound a lot more like how I imagine a true AI would work. I’ve also thought LLMs were a dead end for a while now.
