  • It’s very strange how the person you are arguing with keeps insisting that because Putin says there should be a return to peace in Mali that means things are not going well for Russia. I don’t understand the logic there. Isn’t that what everyone always says when conflicts break out? That’s the standard diplomatic canned response. What, is he supposed to say “we want the fighting to continue”?

So strange how some people’s mind works. Although I don’t even think they came up with all of these talking points themselves. It seems there has been another co-ordinated dissemination of talking points in the pro-Ukrainian media and everyone who consumes that is now repeating the same things they heard, including about how Russia is supposedly losing ground in Ukraine.

They probably had all the messaging pre-prepared in anticipation of terrorists successfully overrunning the Mali government, and now they don’t quite know how to pivot.

  • You should have called them out more on the “Russia lost net territory” assertion because it just flat out isn’t true. There hasn’t been a single month since 2022 in which Russia has not made net gains in territory.

Even arch-neocon think tank ISW admits this:

And if someone wants to double check that claim, here’s the granular breakdown on a sub-weekly basis, including the latest data up to mid April, based on neutral mapper Suriyak: https://smo-tracker.com/war-posts

Not that territorial advance matters all that much in a war of attrition scenario, but still, we should not let demonstrably false claims go unchallenged.

  • What is also happening is that Russia is making more money selling at a discount on the spot market, especially with the price increases happening now, than if they had long term fixed contracts. That’s what all of these morons here in Europe don’t understand either. When they tore up the very favorable contracts they had with Russia and went to buying Russian oil and gas at spot prices and through intermediaries like India, they just put more money in Russia’s pocket.
