I think there’s a significant difference between “neutral” and “diverse”.

For example, Reddit is big enough that if you find yourself holding an unpopular opinion in some particular subreddit and you’re getting battered with downvotes, you can probably find some other similar subreddit that’s more friendly to whatever view you’ve got that’s drawing ire. People speak derisively of “bubbles” and “echo chambers”, but really, why should I stick around and try to engage with people who just don’t want you around? Communities naturally tend to segregate themselves along ideological lines like this.

Here on the Fediverse the population’s too small to support quite so many diverse communities yet, unfortunately. So if you’ve got an unpopular minority view you can end up stuck with either routinely finding yourself serving as a punching bag or just not posting. That’s no fun.

Indeed. There are lots of proposals for perfectly portable decentralized user identities, subscriptions that transcend specific instances, and whatnot, but until those things actually arrive that’s not the Fediverse we’re dealing with. It’s a hassle having to switch instances.

There’s a broad spectrum between reason and murder. You could tackle them, or bonk them with a stick, or distract them with shiny objects.

The abuse of power is instance-specific, fortunately. The whole point of all this is that there are multiple instances. Just ignore the ones that are run by tankies, those instances are theirs to wallow in if they want.

Are there any laws against it where? You need to specify a jurisdiction.

My main reaction would be that whoever is paying for that data is a fool. It’s available for free.

But now that AI has become advanced enough to get uncomfortably close to us, we need to move the goalposts farther away so everyone can relax again.

Why does it matter why?

I’d say it’s how the Imperium swallowed up and destroyed a number of civilizations that had separated from them that had been developing in much more progressive, prosperous ways. The Olamic Quietude and the Interex come to mind as examples. They showed that humanity didn’t have to go down the terrible path they’ve ended up on.

Or, going farther back to look for a single “worst thing” that’s had the greatest awful knock-on effects, I’d say that’d be the Old Ones’ refusal to grant any aid to the Necrontyr when they asked for it. That one selfish act sparked off the War in Heaven, created the Chaos Gods, and everything that followed.

If you can’t find the books available through legal channels in your country, you might want to consider looking for them on the high seas. !piracy is a good resource for that sort of thing.

A notable exception is the Stargate franchise, where Earth’s spacecraft are largely run by the US Air Force.

That’s why I was suggesting such a simple approach, it doesn’t require AI or machine learning except in the most basic sense. If you want to try applying fancier stuff you could use those basic word-based filters as a first pass to reduce the cost.

Another more general property that might be worth looking for would be substantially similar posts that get cross-posted to a wide variety of communities in a short period of time. That’s a pattern that can have legitimate reasons but it’s probably worth raising a flag to draw extra scrutiny.

One idea for making it computationally lightweight but also robust against bots “tweaking” the wording of each post might be to fingerprint each post based on rare word usage. Spam is likely to mention the brand name of whatever product it’s hawking, which is probably not going to be a commonly used word. So if a bunch of posts come along that all use the same rare words all at once, that’s suspicious. I could also easily see situations where this gives false positives, of course - if some product suddenly does something newsworthy you could see a spew of legitimate posts about it in a variety of communities. But no automated spam checker is perfect.

Tinned tuna is also nice to add for some extra flavor and variety.

No, that’s not the concern here. He’s getting job offers from new employers while he’s midway through this personal project, and he wants to make sure the new employers don’t have anything in their employment contracts that would end up grabbing it.

The old employers trying to claim it was also a concern, but that wasn’t what OP was concerned about so I didn’t mention it. He had a lawyer check over his old employment contract as well to make sure there wasn’t a problem there. As long as he’s not using proprietary tech retained from the old job (and he’s not) there’s no problem there.

Anything you do in your own time is generally unenforceable

With the important caveat that your employment contract may include clauses that give them rights over that stuff anyway, and even if they’re unenforceable you could still end up having to fight in court over it.

Definitely something to keep in mind when reading the contract over, and ideally get a lawyer to take a look. It can be expensive, but weigh that expense against the potential expense of what would happen if you get screwed over.

I actually have a friend who’s involved in a situation like this right now. He got laid off from his old job a few months back and while he was job hunting he started working on a project with a couple other friends that could be worth a fair bit of money. He’s had job offers since then and he got a lawyer to write up a description of the project he’s working on that could be inserted into those “I’m keeping the rights to this stuff” contract sections.

It’s a bit different for him because it’s stuff that he’s actively working on right now, though. It sounds like your case might be simpler, if it’s stuff you haven’t done yet and don’t plan to try working on while employed with this current employer I suspect you won’t need to worry about it. Though of course, IANAL.

And some of those hosts can decide to serve up their content to AI trainers. Some of those hosts can be run by AI trainers, specifically to gather data for training. If one was to try to prevent that then one would be attacking the open nature of the fediverse.

There have been many people raging about their content being used to train AIs without permission or compensation. I’m speaking to those people, not the “fediverse collectively”. As you suggest, the fediverse can’t say anything collectively.
