  • I really think there is no problem here. There is one side that screeches, “We need more people in Lemmy! Lemmy is too obscure and hard to use! We need better UX and less techno-babble when people are trying to sign on!” We also have the opposite side saying, “Fuck the normies! I want my federated server @tek.know.kult for the most austere obscurantists only!”

Let’s be real, guys. If your federated server is weird and obscure, the normals are not going to really encounter it, and they’re not that into all the federation beef. They want to go to lemmy-website.com, put in a username and password, and fuck off to look at funny memes and rage at news stories.

I would say I am at least on the right side of the bell curve when it comes to tech literacy, maybe even the top quartile, and I only sort of understand how the Fediverse works, and no offense guys, I don’t really care that much. I looked at Reddit for the funny memes and to rage at news stories, and when they took my favorite app away (Sync for Reddit), I couldn’t be fucked to get advert-aids on the official app, so I jumped ship. Lemmy is just a bit less engaging, just a bit less addictive, and frankly I’m perfectly happy with that. Huzzah for having a bit more of a doomscroll-life balance.

People will come along with FOSS as well as CS options for joining the Fediverse, things like Threads and Voyager and BlueSky, and the culture of Lemmy will shift likewise. The great news is that with Federation, it will be easy to create islands of autists and weirdos to keep their purity cults as funny as they want them to be, and I think that’s beautiful.

Body shaming a child, ascribing a whole persona based on an abberant situation, then act absolutely smug about it all. How very European.

Children grow out of being overweight all the time. And the facts are that someone WAS breaking into this house that was occupied by a child. If there were no gun, perhaps this would have been a much different article.

ETA: The OP had said something to the effect of, “kid is clearly very overweight, has no problem killing someone else and there were guns. How very American”

  • I can’t help but agree with you, most conservative media is so smug and smarmy, it’s insufferable. “Don’t Walk, Run!” is an example, same with Piers Morgan. Like, can’t these guys say their piece without acting like fucking Ben Shapiro? It’s rare you find a regular, lucid guy just talking about political news or having discussions with the other side.

I’m fascinated by Anna Kasparian’s political evolution over the past year, and I’m almost tempted to see what TYT are up to these days.

  • I’m not sure anyone can neatly tie up relationships in a little bow on here, or if they can they are a world class philosopher, lover, writer. It’s humanity’s oldest hangup, the first subject of our music, the basis for wars and religions and suicides. Some people have a detached, dutiful feeling towards relationships, especially the more fundamentalist types. They see a marriage as a contract, and a duty to God, and the ‘sentimental part’ is tertiary. Others are extravagant romantics, devoting the whole of their passions and agonies to expressions of love, episodes of hot sex and dazzling adventures. Most people are somewhere in the middle of these extremes. I don’t think that any one way is right or wrong, as long as both parties are happy and there is no abuse involved.

For myself, I’m definitely a more passionate person. I am a deep feeler, I get rocked with sentiment and fears and all of the other emotions on a daily basis. My partner is a big part of my life, and it was crazy to imagine that when I had the realization. I’ve always been a loner, fascinated to and attracted to women, wanting sex with a burning need, and by the time I’d met her I had already slept with maybe five women, but the moment you don’t just ‘have sex’ but actually make love with someone, it causes a change in your psyche that you can’t really return from. It sets a benchmark for intimacy for your life.

My partner is a cool-headed, serene stoic. She has an impeccable sense of time management, she remembers birthdays and presents and wishes like nobody I’ve ever met. She’s also far more muted in her expressions of love. She won’t write a three paragraph message on a forum about romance like I am here, but she would write me a little note on the mirror saying “Have a good day at work, I love you”. That push and pull of our different energies gives us so much fuel for our relationship. Someone to chase, someone to be chased. Tale as old as time…
