  • You’re assuming ai writes useable code. I haven’t seen it.

Think of the ai more as a writing assistant, like autocomplete or stack overflow but more so. The IDE I use can autocomplete variables or function calls, but the ai can autocomplete entire lines of code or entire unit tests. AI might try to fit an online answer and related doc to solve a problem I’m seeing. AI might even create a class around a public api that is a great starting point for my code. AI can be a useful tool but it can’t write useable code

  • To me the anti-vax thing is the worst “flat earther “ theory.

    • if you do the math, you see vaccinations are an overwhelming benefit, second only to public health efforts as the most benefit to health at the least cost and danger
    • if you have a basic understanding of contagion, it’s clear that avoiding vaccinations is antisocial, anti society. Personally I think should be criminalized. Where else are we allowing personal choices where someone gets injured or killed and the perpetrator faces no consequences.
    • we all know how ridiculous the autism claim is. Even if you fell for it at the time, it’s been shown ridiculous for half a century now. Why would you cling to this?
    • conspiracy theory? Really? Consider how many people would need to be involved in that conspiracy. Ask yourself: for what purpose?

I suppose I’d buy not being first in line for a new one. There are manufacturing and logistical issues with any new product that might affect what you get

  • Ok, let’s run that thought experiment, what if we’re wrong?

All too often, even if my premise is wrong, I’d get to the same results. Even if I agree with their premise, they are monsters. However you want to marginalize people for different preferences or presentation or not matching their body or skin color or gender, that’s no excuse for the abuse, taking away human rights, taking away normal accommodations for everyday life. Treat people like people.

Equally the thought experiment just proves the original point. Let’s assume there are people who believe the government is full of waste, fraud and abuse, and we need to fix that. They haven’t presented anything to convince us that’s true, their actions cutting people and agencies without investigation, due process, contractual requirements, or regard for constitutional checks and balances is quickly a much bigger problem. Then you have those same people acting above the law, a very suspicious correlation between cuts and personal enrichment of those involved, and you’re firmly in bizarro world territory where the asylum is run by the real lunatics. Even assuming the worst of people employed by the federal government, I can’t conceive of a way this isn’t far worse, proving my original belief

  • For sure, and I hate to even bring up what is all to similar to “tone it down”. You shouldn’t have to be afraid, but reality sucks sometime.

I actually have a kid going through it right now. I can never understand what they’re going through but hope they understand my compassion and love for them. Where I sometimes come across as less supportive is no parent wants their kid to go through life in “hard mode”; it’s not that kind of game.

I suppose you could even draw an analogy for career choice. I’m proud of their choice to be an educator and know they have the qualities to be outstanding, to be inspirational in peoples lives. But this is also going through life in “hard mode”. While it would be a disservice to push them toward software engineering like I did or to choose a career based on money, money is important for how you can live your life. You do need it, and I wish they chose a field that payed enough to live at least as well as I can afford to

  • Tortellini pesto - seems like a lot of steps but it’s simple and fast, little prep time needed

    • slice up some chicken and coat with lemon pepper rub
    • sear it in the cast iron skillet
    • boil the tortellini
    • strain it, goddam, forgot to keep some pasta water again
    • a couple tablespoons of olive oil in the pan,
    • heat garlic and red pepper flakes to infuse the oil
    • dump in a small jar of pesto and mix with infused oil, then turn off the burner
    • throw in the pasta, a cut up bell pepper and the meat, and mix (effing pasta water would make this perfect)
    • fold in some shaved Parmesan and fresh baby spinach leaves, and serve

Edit: this was me discovering wilted spinach is much better than slimy black overcooked spinach that I experienced most of my life, and I haven’t gotten tired of it. If I remember the pasta water, it’s nice and creamy

  • the “schoville” number is factoring into your hot sauce buying decisions then I have personal beef

Not everyone is looking for the highest number. Some of us take it as another piece of useful info about the sauce. For example if I’m going to have company, I need to compare to Tabasco, because that’s what normies know. I also like different levels of heat with different foods, and the Scoville level gives me that

  • I used to use Franks or Franks Buffalo sauce in everything. It’s not very hot but has excellent flavor.

Now you made me go count: I have 7 different ones on the counter plus 5 in the fridge, more if you count horseradishes and spicy mustards (probably the empty bottle in recycling doesn’t count). I love the home made one, the chili crisp, and the dragon sauce, but my best answer to the question has to be Mellissa’s because I have so many of their flavors. They’re all a little different: maybe sriracha is good with one food but too sweet for another. Maybe I want to taste that Louisiana flair on my shrimp but that chili can stand up to reaper sauce

  • A night club some where in the DC area. Apparently some people have fun at these places and it was extremely popular

Anyway I was getting to know my cousin again after years of no contact, getting to know how toxic she was. We cut the line and brushed past the bouncer and walked around the club. As an average sized girl, she was more or less able to lose herself in the crowd. As a bigger guy just trying to stick with someone I knew in an unfamiliar place, I literally had a bouncer chasing me through the crowd, grabbing at me to try to drag me out. I am very much not a fighter, so consider myself extremely lucky we just got peacefully kicked out
